Dead Man’s Flat
At the confluence of the North Fork and East Fork of Moose Creek, a large grassy flat holds two legendary graves. Eddie Wheeler and John Shean died here in the spring of 1895 after spending the winter trapping and hunting in the wilderness. They were buried by the third member of their party, Jack Craig, who survived to tell the story.
The following images are a report of their trip, written by Robert Printz, son of Freddie Printz. Freddie was a local guide at that time and was enlisted to make a return trip to Dead Man’s Flat to investigate the deaths.
Original document can be found at the Moose Creek ranger station in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.
